Jonathan Sklar, FRCPsych, is an Independent training analyst and fellow of the British Psychoanalytic Society, working in full-time private practice. He was a member of the board of the IPA (2015–2019), and has been a vice president of the European Psychoanalytic Federation (2007–2011). He was consultant psychotherapist and head of the Psychotherapy Department of Addenbrooke’s Hospital for twelve years. He taught “Ferenczi and Contemporary Psychoanalysis” on the MSc psychoanalytic studies at University College London, and has taught psychoanalysis regularly in Cape Town, Chicago, Peru and Eastern Europe. He led a study weekend in Paris in June 2024 for EPF candidates on Anxieties in the Clinical Encounter. He is the author of the following books: Landscapes of the Dark: History, Trauma, Psychoanalysis (2011, Karnac), Balint Matters: Psychosomatics and the Art of Assessment (2017, Karnac), Dark Times: Psychoanalytic Perspectives on Politics, History and Mourning (2019, Phoenix) and The Soft Power of Culture: Art Transitional Space Death and Play (2024, Karnac).

I find the annual theme "Beyond War. Making Peace With Life" is timely and intriguing. These things are presently in my mind as our world is erupting into violence that is spiralling towards devastating the planet and our species.

I wrote a paper recently titled "Dresden - A Discussion on Destruction Then and Now." This will be the starting point for our first meeting.

At the second meeting, we will discuss another recent paper, “Regression: Violence, Destruction and Survival". This is a clinical paper about profound cruelty and working through violent enactments, both the patient's and the analyst’s, leading to authenticity and the return of the True Self.

At the third meeting, we will examine the violence of war as masculine violence that erases the feminine. This would include the historical exclusion of the feminine body from democratic processes, public discourse, and analytic theory.

This will lead to the emergence of the Third Position - the hidden vaginal space that may resolve the constancy of the binary of us and them, which is the terrain and core of phallic violence. Instead of this binary, the emergence of the IMAGiNATION as a development of Free Association and the opening of space in communities to talk together, rather than bystanding. And what this might mean for the development of democracy and debate - for citizens and politics.
