What Do We Do?

We view psychoanalysis as a dynamic, self-reflective entity that engages with its environment and continuously evolves. We contribute to this process by establishing a distinctive space for contemporary thinkers and clinicians that brings together different generations and fosters collaboration on innovative ideas free from institutional constraints. We call it the Free Zone.

Our initiatives include reMIND, The Living Theory Conference, the inSIGHT project, the Cornerstones of Contemporary Psychoanalysis Series, the Internal Habitats Magazine, and the Wild Thoughts Blog. The Cornerstone courses and the Living Theory Conference are organised around a yearly theme. In 2025, we will celebrate the 50th anniversary of André Green's seminal paper, "The Analyst, Symbolization and Absence in the Analytic Setting," also known as the London Report. In 2026, the annual theme will be Beyond War. Making Peace With Life.

reMIND

reMIND is a group focused on clinical case studies. This group distinguishes itself through the rotating discussants it offers each year, providing diverse perspectives and approaches. In 2026, the confirmed discussants are Danille Knafo and Leopoldo Blegger. At reMIND, the supportive environment of the Free Zone enables participants to openly challenge one another, fostering a space for meaningful discussion, interaction, and learning.

Living Theory Conference

The annual Living Theory Conference is designed to provide ample space for in-depth discussions of issues shaping the present and future of psychoanalysis.

inSIGHT

In the inSIGHT project, we examine how contemporary psychoanalysts integrate seminal ideas proposed by seminal authors into their own personal theory and technique. InSIGHT comprises four independent seminars: My Meltzer with João Sousa Monteiro, My Klein with Judy K. Eekhoff, My Lacan with Dany Nobus, and My Winnicott with Lesley Caldwell.

Cornerstones of Contemporary Psychoanalysis

The Cornerstones are an online seminar series based on the contributions of leading international figures in contemporary psychoanalysis. It aims to enrich the theoretical and clinical understanding of our work with patients. In 2026, Cornerstone courses will be presented by Christine Anzieu-Premmeur, Jonathan Sklar and Heinz Weiss.

Internal Habitats

The Internal Habitats is an online interview magazine created by three psychologists. Every other month, we visit the internal habitat of a creative and captivating figure in the fields of mental health, culture, society, or science. The Habitats are in Portuguese.

Wild Thoughts Blog

A polyphonic take on the poliedric nature of the human phenomenon. An international blog by Free Association Lisbon.

Are our events for you?

Well, psychoanalysts, psychotherapists, psychologists, students and people seriously interested in psychoanalysis from around the world are enrolling in our events. Most of our events are recorded and made available online for future reference and consultation for the participants. AI-assisted real-time captions help to break the language barrier, even for those who do not feel entirely confident with English. However, what truly makes a difference is not just technology but the environment within the group, where participants support one another in thinking critically and expressing their thoughts.

Three for Free Grant

To help students and young colleagues participate, we created the THREE for FREE Grant, which offers three free entrances to each of our events for those who need it. To apply, please send an email to people@freeassociation.pt explaining how we can assist you.

Complete inSIGHT (4 in 1)
